Laser surgery is one of the most exciting and new surgical techniques available to the veterinary profession. Laser Surgery utilizes a finely focused light beam instead of a traditional blade to create incisions during surgery. There are many benefits to using laser surgery and it is highly recommended over traditional surgery.
Benifits
The use of laser in surgery is benificial for the following reasons:
- Bleeding is controlled significantly as the diode laser seals small blood vessels 0.6 mm or less in diameter
- Post-operative swelling is also reduced due to the same sealing effect of the lymphatic vessels.
- The reduction of pain and associated inflammatory factors.
- Reduction in pain along with decreased bleeding and swelling means that the patient can return to normal activity and his home environment much sooner.
Goals
The goals of laser surgery are to provide a treatment modality, which provides increased safety with less bleeding, swelling and shortened recovery time.
