Weightloss Program
Greater than 50% of the pet population is overweight. This means that obesity is the number one nutritional disorder of pets. This condition can contribute to health problems with the heart, liver, kidneys, and skeleton. There is also an increased associated risk with anesthesia as a result of obesity.
Causes of Obesity
Improper diet is the number one cause of obesity in American pets today. Feeding an unbalanced diet and/or overfeeding in proportion to the amount of exercise a pet gets may results in more calories going in than are being utilized. With all the modern luxuries of life, pets are leading more sedentary lives and are being fed more "junk foods".
Spaying and neutering may alter your pet's activity level (there is less escaping and roaming when a female is in heat) and their metabolic rate may slow down, lowering the amount of calories that your pet needs to maintain their body weight.
There are some endocrine diseases that may contribute to the development of obesity, including thyroid or pituitary dysfunction. Your pet will have a thorough physical exam and a complete blood profile done to determine if there are any other metabolic conditions that may need to be addressed so that a safe and effective weight loss program may be designed for your pets specific needs.
